A Couple Trailers and a Clip of Rumsfeld Doing Crazy Things During Press Conferences

A few links, two of them funny and one of them pretty damn cool but slightly worrisome. First, the funny ones.

1.) This is the trailer for the new CGI-animated movie Meet the Robinsons. The reason I'm linking to this trailer is because of a brief scene right at the end involving a Tyrannasuarus Rex. It made me laugh out loud. It manages to be pitiful and hilarious at the same time. Check it out.

2.) I was not aware that the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson was in the business of doing actual comedy, but clearly they are. Their writers have come up with a damn funny bit involving the secretary of defense that you can view here. It's silly but very well-done.

Okay, the cool but slightly worrisome link.

3.) This is the trailer for "Spider Man 3". Like I said, looks pretty cool. I'll let you watch it if you haven't already. I'll meet you below the picture of Spidey to tell you what I think of it.

All right, coolness aside, doesn't this movie look crowded as hell? Sandman, Green Goblin 2, and Venom? And then the love traingle aspect between Parker, MJ and Gwen Stacy which isn't even alluded to in the trailer? This is way too much, I think. If anyone can pull it off, it's Sam Raimi, but I worry this thing could lapse into "Batman Forever" territory pretty easily.

Yeah, just a bunch of links today. Enjoy your weekends.

Yeah, when the wraps were loosened a bit on the Spidey 3 movie a year ago or less, I was excited to get a glimpse at the new villians. First, it was Sandman, then it was Green Goblin 2, at which point I kind of got worried thinking it may be too many. Then I heard Venom, and my concerns seemed founded. I'm a little worried, too, but I think Raimi has shown he can do these movies, so I have to trust him. The issue with the first Batman franchise was a switch in directors, right? Wasn't Shumacker responsible for making a shumockery of whole franchise? Ahem.

That's not what worries me the most, though. What's up with Sandman being the original killer of Ben? And in this trailer they elude to the costume being a manifestation of Peter's darker, revenge side, which is kind of cool in a way, but a major departure from the original storyline. And, I've heard rumors of the Eddie Brock storyline (plus seeing the Venom mask, which is not what I imagined), and that has me worried, too. In the end, however, I have a feeling once the lights go out and the movie starts we'll all be pleased... again.

You can see the Venom mask here: http://www.celluloidandvinyl.com/2006/10/24/venom-revealed/

Yeah it's pretty cheap for the writers to say, "Oh no, THIS is the guy who originally killed your uncle!" Your character already expended that rage on the other guy -- now you're going to tap it again just because you need to give Spider Man a better beef against Sandman? Maybe it'll work, but on the face of it, it does seem lazy. Also, the Sandman sand effects just make me think of the Mummy Returns, which isn't so good.

As for the Venom mask -- yeah it's a little understated for my tastes, but if there's one shot where his jaw unhinges to reveal a gaping maw of teeth, then it's saved.

I'm maintaining my faith in Raimi. I believe I remember you naysaying the second film before it came out, but, as we all saw, it deserves a spot above Citizen Kane on the AFI Top 100 Films. That's right, I said it. Smuck it.

BTW, is that a Mark Bagley drawing of Spidey? Boo! You could've at least gotten a McFarlane or a Romita or a Ditko drawing, dude... come on.

I still find it difficult to separate the first and second Spiderman in my mind. I liked 'em both, but I didn't feel like the second one really upped the ante, I guess. I like that Parker will pull a Superman II in this one and try to leave Spidey behind. Or wait... was the the second one? Crap. Whatever.

Speaking of Superman II, you hear about the DVD of Donner's version?

Yeah, and apparently the donner version is so much better.
