A Week-Long Quasi-Hiatus

Hope everyone had an excellent weekend. Sure enough, it rained all day Saturday. Again. Thanks Atlanta weather. Also, for anyone who's wondering, Friday night's Goizueta Business School prom went fine. I just followed my wife around the room as she said hi to people I'd either never met or had met before only briefly, making sure to smile pleasantly when necessary, even to laugh when it looked like someone had just finished saying something funny, even if I couldn't really hear them. And since the DJ never once played a slow song (can you really call a dance without slow songs a "prom"?), I was relieved of my duty to dance a few. So it went off much better than I had any reason to expect.

At any rate, I'm doing a week-long hiatus this week. Not because I'm so swamped or anything, but just to try and recharge the blog-part of my brain a little. Now, I know that often (if not all the time) I've posted up blog entries that required almost nothing at all in the way of thought or effort, in essence a day's hiatus, I've decided that instead of a full-on dead-blog hiatus, I'll just post up a storyboard each day (I've got tons of them), maybe accompanied by a brief comment, or maybe not. So, like a mini-blog break for me, but still something to look at for you folks when you check back here.

So this week I'm posting up a storyboards from an Alien Ant Farm video I did way back in 2003 called "Glow". I never saw this video, so post up a comment if this looks familiar to you -- I'd like to know how the video came out. The concept behind this one (BTW, not a Marc Klasfeld-directed video) is that Alien Ant Farm is rocking out with a bunch of household appliances. The appliances get into the music and the performance begins to feature some familiar elements from wild, teenager-filled concerts. So, here's Monday's storyboard: one of the Ant Farmers head-banging alongside a lamp. Brilliance.

I'm mad at you. Not because of the week long hiatus. But because you reminded me of the existence of Alien Ant Farm...Man, did they suck. Anytime your career takes off from a novelty cover of a Michael Jackson song, look out.

For your sake, I hope the video aired. I don't recall ever seeing it, but that's not saying much. The only time I watch MTV or the deuce is during the fifteen minutes of cereal city in the morning before I leave for work at 7am. As far as I can tell, that's the only time they play music videos anymore. They don't play anything good, mind you, but still.

The storyboard makes the video look like a ripoff of that Pixar short. What was that called? Lampy? Lamp Jr.? Finding Lampo? Ah, who knows. Regardless, I think Nine Inch Nails takes the case for best appliance/household item inspired video with that one where Reznor's face appears in the pin thingy you can buy at Spencer's and leave impressions of your bird hand in.

Who knows, maybe soon you'll be commissioned to do the boards for the next Papa Roach video about an evil coaster. Can't wait.

Bring on the Nelly storyboards! He's a St. Lunatic!

That lamp looked like the pixar lamp. But the drawing was fantastic. Carry-on.
What are we going to do without your blog. "Where's Brian?" I'll say everyday. Everyone watch out for Brian, he's our little lamb. And he embarasses me at Red Lobster.

Did the guitarist's neck become broken in that drawing?

Here are two quotes from The Family Guy I feel really capture the mood of this particular entry. I apologize in advance for the lengthy post, but I feel its relevance will make up for it:

Stewie: How you uh, how you comin' on that novel you're working on? Huh? Gotta a big, uh, big stack of papers there? Gotta, gotta nice litte story you're working on there? Your big novel you've been working on for 3 years? Huh? Gotta, gotta compelling protaganist? Yeah? Gotta obstacle for him to overcome? Huh? Gotta story brewing there? Working on, working on that for quite some time? Huh? (voice getting higher pitched) Yea, talking about that 3 years ago. Been working on that the whole time? Nice little narrative? Beginning, middle, and end? Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? At the end your main character is richer from the experience? Yeah? Yeah? (voice returns to normal) No, no, you deserve some time off.

Stewie (his voice getting progressively higher): Oh I know it hurts now Brian, but look at the bright side: you have some new material for that novel you've been writing. You know...the novel you've been workin' on? You know the the one, uh, you've been workin on for three years? You know the novel. Got somethin' new to write about now. You know? Maybe a, maybe a main character gets into a relationship and suffers a little heartbreak? Somethin' like what... what you've just been through? Draw from real life experience? Little, little heartbreak? You know? Work it into the story? Make the characters a little more three dimensional? Little, uh, richer experience for the reader? Make those second hundred pages really keep the reader guessing what's going to happen? Some twists and turns? A little epilogue? Everybody learns that the hero's journey isn't always a happy one? (Voice returns to normal.) Oh, I look forward to reading it.

And... scene.
